Over the past two weeks in Pittsburgh, I’ve had the privilege to experience and learn more than I ever imagined. I am especially grateful for the guidance and support of my instructors, Dr. Phil Hnatkovich and Dr. Ray Jones, who made this experience both insightful and inspiring. While I took away countless lessons, three key reflections stand out.
Pittsburgh is a city unlike any other. It is a place where rich history meets modern growth. Its deep roots and cultural diversity create a foundation for businesses to thrive. Many local businesses work to honor that heritage, even when creating something new. A perfect example is the Oaklander Hotel, a modern building that now occupies a space once home to a music venue. Rather than erasing the past, the hotel incorporated the history of the site into its design. These kinds of thoughtful choices can be seen throughout Pittsburgh, making it a city that feels alive with both past and present.
Another big takeaway for me is that working in a cohort of twelve students is a special experience. We each bring different perspectives and ideas to our classes, conversations, and site visits. I have learned so much from the other students and have been given a glimpse as to what it could be like working as a team in the business world.
Throughout our visits in Pittsburgh, the Haller team met with business owners pursuing vastly different paths, ranging from Irish imports to charcuterie boards. Despite their different businesses, common themes emerged. For example, several business owners expressed the challenge of boosting sales and foot traffic during slower periods. These shared challenges highlighted how businesses, no matter the industry, can learn and grow from one another’s experiences.
Looking forward, I feel ready for the next ten days in Ireland. Reading Say Nothing, by Patrick Radden Keefe, has given me a deeper understanding of Northern Ireland’s history, allowing me to visualize places like the Peace Walls and the countryside. I look forward to meeting new people, exploring businesses, and continuing this incredible journey of learning and growth.
