Wrapping Up Pittsburgh

Our time in Pittsburgh for the Haller Program has come to an end, and we are preparing for the trip to Ireland now. Visiting the various communities within Pittsburgh and businesses showed me many different cultures, neighborhoods, and perspectives.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. Touring and visiting historic neighborhoods with rich backgrounds like Fineview and the Hill District showed how the city of Pittsburgh as a whole has always adjusted to its environment. The city’s steep hills and changing population were challenging obstacles, but the community found creative solutions, like the implementation of huge stairs for easier access to the higher elevations. This idea of adapting carried into all the businesses we met, like Field Day in Lawrenceville and the Irish Design Center, where success came from finding ways around challenges like seasonal activity and hosting events to boost their business.

Beyond the characteristics I noticed which drive successful people and business, the classes within the Haller Program were greatly beneficial. They taught me how to evaluate businesses and markets from unique perspectives and analyze them with useful information that could actually benefit them. Furthermore, discussions with my group and people like Joe Pietropola taught me the importance of creating a diverse social circle with many different strengths to help each other thrive.

Regarding our upcoming trip to Ireland, there are many details and events I am excited for. Using my knowledge gained from our time in Pittsburgh, I’m looking forward to applying the same principles and ideas we learned in Pittsburgh. I personally am looking forward to exploring the vastly different culture, architecture, and social norms in Ireland compared to Pittsburgh. Our project delivery is also something I am looking forward to considering the work we have done so far and watching our final presentation slowly come together.
