Today we took a long trip driving through Derry, Donegal, The Dark Hedges, and finally ending at the beautiful Giant’s Causeway. We started the day walking through the Dark Hedges, most famous for its appearance in Game of thrones. It was very beautiful and a great picture spot due to the winding branches of the trees. After that, we had lunch at Fullerton and enjoyed another bus ride to Giants Causeway. The scenery was absolutely stunning. We hiked down all the way to the hexagonal stones with the ocean crashing around you. It was a gorgeous view and was one of my favorite sites we have visited so far.
Next, we went to Derry and took a tour with Roy around the city. We saw the murals in the Bogside and walked along the city walls that have stood since the 1600s. I was particularly interested by the Museum of Free Derry. Witnessing images and murals from Bloody Sunday made me feel as though I was actually walking through history rather than just reading about it. While it is good to acknowledge their history, it also slightly romanticizes the violence which should be left in the past. Finally, after a long day we made our way back to Mulroy hotel where we had dinner. One of the things that stood out to me today was how it’s not just the views or the attractions, it’s the stories we attach to the place. The history, the people you meet, and the things they share with you, are the things that really make a place special and worth a visit.
