Reflection on Growth and Takeaways from My Program in Stockholm
My experience in Stockholm was one of the most positive in my life. Not only because of what I learned about Sweden, but also because of what I learned about myself. When I landed, I simply thought that I would be getting used to a new city and working environment. Rather, I was getting used to a completely new mindset about work, life, and how people treat one another. That adjustment has affected me in personal ways. It has affected me also in academic and professional ways. Those changes will stick with me long after my return to Pitt.
Personal Growth
Living in Sweden, I have become more adaptable and tolerant than I ever thought possible. Coming from the US, I was used to a high-stress setting where quick decisions and immediate response were the norm. In Stockholm, I discovered a culture that’s functional and direct. Where consensus is greater than convenience. At first, the slower pace irritated me. I misunderstood silences in speech as indifference. Over time, I learned to sit with that silence, to listen, and to adapt. I’ve also become more independent through navigation in a new city and picking up some Swedish vocab. These experiences have taught me resilience, self-assurance, and an increased ability to handle environments I am unfamiliar.
Academic Growth
Academically, this experience has deepened my understanding of cross-cultural communication in ways that no textbook could replicate. I had read about the concept of low-context vs. high-context communication, but living in a Swedish, low-context environment made the differences understandable. I experienced firsthand how clarity and directness can make collaboration smoother. I also saw how nonverbal cues like nodding quietly in agreement still play a role. This is true even in a low-context culture. Being able to connect theory to daily interactions has strengthened my critical thinking and made me more observant. I also learned how workplace norms reflect broader societal values. Sweden’s strong commitment to equality and work-life balance shapes everything from meeting structures to vacation policies. These insights will enrich my contributions in academic discussions at Pitt. They will also give me a more global lens when approaching research or case studies.
Professional Growth
Professionally, I’ve gained skills that I know will set me apart in my future career. I’ve become more comfortable working in flat hierarchies where initiative is valued, but self-promotion is discouraged. I’ve learned how to contribute ideas confidently without dominating the conversation. I also know how to read the room. I recognize when it’s time to push forward and when it’s better to keep discussing until everyone is aligned. I’ve adapted to hybrid work in an international setting. I learned to balance clear, concise written communication efficiently. I also focus on relationship building that comes from informal chats during fika breaks. I’ve come to appreciate that productivity isn’t just about working harder or longer. It’s about working smarter. It’s also about respecting boundaries and trusting your colleagues to do the same.
Key Takeaways
If I had to summarize my biggest takeaways from my time in Stockholm, they would be the following. Listen before speaking , Trust builds strong teams, work-life balance, to always explore, and to appreciate nature.
When I return to Pitt, I plan to actively incorporate these lessons into how I work with others. In group projects, I want to make space for all voices to be heard. This approach might slow the pace of decision-making. I’ll focus on clear, respectful communication both in writing and in person. In leadership roles, I want to delegate properly, and foster a healthy work-life balance
Future Career Application
Looking further ahead, I see these skills becoming a core part of my professional life. In any organization I join, I aim to merge the Swedish approach to teamwork. This approach is rooted in equality, trust, and balance. I will combine it with the drive and ambition I’ve carried from my U.S. background. I believe this combination will allow me to lead with empathy. I will work effectively across cultures. I aim to build teams that are both high-performing and sustainable. Whether I’m working in an international company or a local organization, I’ll carry forward the understanding. How we work together matters just as much as what we achieve.
Overall, Stockholm has been an amazing experience. I have learned to appreciate balance, directness, honesty, and love for nature. Living in Sweden has showed me a country and culture that truly loves the environment. I have discovered what it has to offer. Exploring and learning new things here is something I will carry forever.
