A Journey Like No Other

My experience delivering the presentation was an entirely positive and rewarding one, offering both a chance to share my ideas and to contribute meaningfully to a real-world challenge. As part of the financial group, our mission was to develop strategies that would increase year-round foot traffic in Carrigart. Carrigart is a small, but vibrant town with untapped potential. Our goal was to share ideas of ways to generate more consistent revenue and to help the local businesses remain open throughout all 12 months of the year, rather than relying heavily on a short summer season.

My specific focus centered on leveraging festivals as a tool for economic growth. Currently Carrigart only hosts a single festival in the middle of its peak season. While this festival is successful, it does little to address the gaps in visitor numbers before and after that window. This creates a missed opportunity for businesses that struggle during the quieter months. My proposal aimed to change that dynamic by introducing a new festival at the very start of the peak season and shifting the existing one to the end. By doing so, the town could create “bookends” for its busiest period, keeping tourists engaged for longer and encouraging them to plan multiple visits across the season.

This approach would not only provide an immediate boost to local shops, restaurants, accommodations, and service providers but would also create a sense of ongoing excitement that could enhance Carrigart’s reputation as a year-round destination. Over time, if this initial adjustment proved successful, the strategy could be expanded by adding even more festivals and themed events during shoulder seasons, further stretching the economic benefits. The ultimate goal would be to transform Carrigart from a place that thrives for just a few months into a community that enjoys steady, sustainable tourism and economic stability throughout the year.

I am deeply grateful for this incredible opportunity to travel to Ireland through the Haller Global Fellowship. It was an experience that far exceeded my expectations in every way. Over the course of the trip, I was able to immerse myself in the beautiful culture and history of this remarkable country, seeing firsthand the landscapes and communities that I had only read about or seen in pictures. From the stunning coastlines and rolling green hills to the charming small towns and lively city streets, every destination offered its own distinct charm and story. I am extremely appreciative of how welcoming the people in Belfast and Donegal were to our group.

What made this trip most special to me was the chance to connect with new people. Engaging with both locals and fellow travelers, who shared their knowledge, traditions, and personal experiences, made this such a great trip. Whether it was learning about the history behind local businesses, participating in community events, or simply chatting with residents, each interaction enriched my understanding of Ireland and its people. I was also able to see different aspects of Irish life. I learned that their sports, festivals, food, and art are deeply tied to the spirit and resilience of the communities. The guidance and support that we received from Dr. Hnatkovich, AllPeopleBeHappy, and the local businesses and people were what really enhanced this trip.

Beyond the cultural and educational aspects, this journey was personally transformative. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, inspired me to try new things, and allowed me to grow not only as a student but also as a person. The friendships I formed, the knowledge I gained, and the memories I created will stay with me forever. I truly appreciate the dedication and effort that went into planning and guiding this trip, and I recognize how fortunate I am to have been a part of such a meaningful and eye-opening adventure. This experience has left me with a newfound appreciation for travel, cultural exchange, and the bonds we form when we step into new environments with an open mind.
