After having a few days to rest and meet up with all of my family members, it is the perfect time to reflect on my final presentation and overall the entire trip. In preparation for the presentation, I was struggling to find suggestions that would genuinely improve Carrigart during its peak season. All of my thoughts would either be too costly for the town, or the ideas would be too large-scale. Eventually, after talking to locals in Carrigart, I narrowed my focus into two different topics. The first topic would address parking issues that the town faces during its peak tourist season. Almost every person I spoke to stated that most people would drive through Carrigart because they saw no available parking spaces. This led to a massive loss in foot traffic, and in turn left out hundreds of potential customers. After hours of thought, I realized that the most effective solution that Carrigart could implement in a short period was a parking sign. While this idea seems simple, it would advertise a parking lot that is not visible to people driving down the main road. This was the first talking point in my project, and it was a success. Moving on to the second part of my project, finding sites that have grants available was something that I believed would have a significant impact on the town. There are grants for almost anything you can think of, such as infrastructure improvement, improvements for local businesses, and expanding ecotourism-based industries. Going back to our group’s time in Pittsburgh, all of the towns we visited utilized grants to bolster their tourism industry. Small towns that do not have excess time or resources can use grants to significant effect, which is why I included it in my presentation. Overall, my group offered fantastic suggestions that could be implemented with a low cost to the town. Each group member had a unique take on how to handle the financial aspect of tourism. Looking back, this trip has taught me so much that I would have never learned if I had not decided to apply for the program. Getting first-hand accounts of what goes into running a small business is something that few other programs offer. I now have gotten a head start on college life and met people with whom I hope to continue friendships.
