Hi! I’m Jonah Chapman. I would describe myself as pretty worldly, as I love traveling, learning languages, trying new foods, and meeting people from different cultures. The featured photo here is from my first days in Sydney, another student snapped it on my Nikon D700 during golden hour in Coogee Beach.
Academically, I’m a junior at the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in Global Management, which is a degree the university offers that is comparable to an International Business degree. From a professional standpoint, I’m seeking a career in virtually anything that involves both business and the international marketplace, whether that be in supply chain, marketing, or business analytics. I’m willing to explore opportunities that align with me (preferably abroad).
I chose the Global Business Institute because it combines university course credits with hands-on job experience at an internship. I asked around initially to see which was the best one, there were 3 options: Florence, London, or Sydney. I chose Sydney because I figured if I’m going to do a study abroad, I might as well do it in a place that I might not otherwise go. I had already spent a significant amount of time in Europe, so I was definitely ready for something in another continent. So far, I’m really enjoying the program; it is well-managed, and I really feel that I can appreciate the vibe of the city.
As far as my goals for the program, I want to become more competent in various workplace situations and decide what exactly I’d like to specialize in once I get back to the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, at my internship, I would like to contribute meaningfully to projects at my internships.
As far as the new university and culture in Sydney, the University of Sydney and the University of Pittsburgh share similar academic expectations, but the feel is different. At UTS, seminars are more interactive, and the vibe is more relaxed as there is less of a power distance between the professor and the students. Additionally, classes at UTS are quite cozy in that the staff working there recognize you and provide you with snacks between breaks. You can tell they really want you to enjoy your experience. Overall, Sydney blends its global city environment with a coastal lifestyle with a significant emphasis on living well.
As far as my neighborhood’s first impressions go, the area of Zetland is quiet with small parks, tree-lined streets, plenty of Asian eateries, and modern apartment buildings. It’s also quite safe and about a 5 to 10 minute metro ride to the downtown area, which is not bad at all.
Currently, here in Sydney, I live in a shared arrangement with roommates in a Meriton hotel apartment with a balcony, kitchen, living space, washing machine, and dryer, which facilitates easy living. Adapting to this lifestyle was natural, as my roommates are respectful, and having a real kitchen helps me save money and eat well while also giving me the option to go out and try new foods.
