Trouble in Budapest

Last weekend, I traveled to Budapest, Hungary. Although I had an amazing time in the city, the journey there was far more stressful than I had anticipated. Recently, there have been numerous strikes across Italy within the transportation industry, particularly affecting train stations and airports. Because of these disruptions, especially those occurring in Milan, train schedules throughout the country were impacted. As a result, my train to the Rome airport was delayed by 30 minutes, which caused us to miss our connecting ride.

This delay set off a chain reaction of complications. We were unable to find another ride in time, missed a bus that could have helped us recover the lost time, and ultimately had to book a taxi to ensure we made it to the airport. By the time we arrived at the airport, we were cutting it incredibly close and made it to our gate with just 20 minutes to spare. The entire experience was frustrating and nerve-wracking.

Despite how stressful those few hours were, I now find myself reflecting on the experience in a much more positive light. At the moment, I had no choice but to stay as calm as possible and think critically about alternative solutions. Rather than panicking, I worked through each obstacle, which ultimately allowed us to reach our destination on time. Looking back, I am proud of how I handled the situation and grateful that everything worked out in the end.

This experience was particularly impactful because it gave me a deeper understanding of what travel truly entails. Vacations are often smooth, carefully planned experiences where everything falls into place. However, real travel can be unpredictable and challenging, requiring adaptability and resilience. In the past, I have participated in study abroad programs where a program instructor from the Pitt Business Global Experiences Office guided us and managed any unexpected issues. Traveling independently, without that in-person support system, pushed me to rely on my own judgment and remain level-headed under pressure.

Through this experience, I have grown significantly. I have learned that I am resourceful, capable, and able to navigate difficult situations even when solutions are not immediately clear. This realization has made me less fearful of uncertainty and more confident in my ability to face challenges head-on. It is a sense of growth that I plan to carry with me throughout the rest of my semester abroad and into my future career.
