Ciao Firenze!

on

I am incredibly thankful for this experience. I’ve learned so much, even through the small, everyday moments like living with six roommates. That alone has made me more patient, flexible, and better at navigating situations that don’t always go as planned. Being in a completely new environment has pushed me to adapt to different cultures and languages, and I’ve grown more confident in my ability to handle unfamiliar situations and embrace the unexpected.

Personally, one of my biggest areas of growth has been learning how to go with the flow. I used to be very type A when traveling, planning out every detail with strict itineraries. Over time, I’ve learned to slow down, take in the culture around me, and truly live in the moment instead of rushing from one sight to the next. Some of my favorite memories have come from those unplanned moments.

Academically, I’ve found myself more engaged and present in my classes. The smaller class sizes have allowed for more interaction and discussion, which is how I learn best. I especially enjoy the hands-on aspects of my coursework, like practicing Italian through games and conversations, and exploring Florence through fieldwork in my global city class. Being able to connect what I’m learning directly to my surroundings has made the experience much more meaningful.

Professionally, I’ve developed a greater awareness of how important cultural context is in communication. I’ve learned to adjust my language, tone, and approach depending on where I am, recognizing that what feels natural in the United States may not translate the same way in Italy or other countries. This has been especially valuable as someone interested in a career in marketing, where understanding your audience is key.

Overall, I am so grateful for this experience. It has expanded my perspective and shown me just how much there is to learn from the world around me. It’s made me more open-minded, adaptable, and curious, and it’s something I will carry with me long after I leave Florence.
