As I prepared to begin my internship in Berlin, I spent time researching both the company and the industry in which it operates. The organization I am working with is involved in the blockchain and Web3 space, an industry focused on decentralized technology, digital innovation, online communities, and emerging forms of collaboration. Because blockchain technology continues to evolve rapidly, companies and employees must constantly adapt to new trends, technologies, and ideas. Learning about this environment before starting my internship has helped me better understand what to expect and the skills that are necessary to succeed.
One of the first things that stood out to me about the blockchain and startup industry is the importance of flexibility. Unlike many traditional industries that rely on established processes and clearly defined structures, startups often move quickly and adapt frequently. Teams are usually smaller, which means employees may take on a variety of responsibilities rather than focusing on a single specialized role. One of the things I am most excited about is seeing how technical skills are applied to actual business challenges. There are also several competencies that seem especially important within Germany’s work culture and Berlin’s international startup ecosystem. Team members often come from different countries, backgrounds, and professional experiences. Being able to work effectively with people who have different perspectives is an important skill that contributes to successful teamwork and collaboration.

Through my research and conversations with others, I have learned that reliability and accountability are important expectations. Networking plays an important role in the startup ecosystem because many collaborations, partnerships, and career opportunities develop through professional relationships. Being surrounded by such an active and connected community makes Berlin an exciting place to gain experience and build professional connections.

Although I had not officially started my internship when I first began researching the company and industry, the preparation process itself gave me a stronger understanding of the environment I would be entering.
