Coming into this academic year, I felt pretty confident about the path I wanted to take. I had a plan in mind, knew what I wanted to study, and thought I had a good idea of how my time at Pitt would unfold. But as of today, I’ve realized that there isn’t just one path to reaching my goals, there are a lot more opportunities than I ever expected.
That realization came after having lunch with one of my professors. We started talking about my long-term goal of becoming a CFO, and they gave me some advice that completely changed the way I think about getting there. They explained that successful CFOs aren’t specialists in just one area, they’re “jack of all trades” professionals. They need a broad understanding of finance, accounting, management, operations, and even communication. Hearing that made me realize that the academic path I originally planned might not be enough. Instead of focusing on just one major, I now need to explore different majors and experiences that will help me build a much more well-rounded skill set.
That conversation also introduced me to something I hadn’t seriously considered before, the CPL Certificate at Pitt. After learning more about it, I realized it’s something I definitely want to add to my time here. It seems like a great opportunity to develop skills outside the classroom and become a stronger leader, which fits perfectly with the kind of career I’m working toward.
Honestly, today felt like a bit of a wake-up call, in the best way possible. I came into this year thinking my plan was already set, but now I see that Pitt has so much more to offer than I realized. Instead of sticking to one narrow path, I want to take advantage of every opportunity I can, whether that’s exploring new majors, earning additional certificates, or getting involved in experiences that help me grow.
My plan may not look the way I originally imagined, but I’m excited about that. Sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you don’t see coming, and I’m looking forward to seeing where these new paths take me.
