As we close the Pittsburgh portion of this Haller Fellowship, I reflect on the most pivotal moments during the past two weeks. Being very new to the world of business, I found myself learning (and humbled) every single day. My most important takeaway was most likely the fact that I need to be more curious. Achieving goals or even a productive meeting starts with asking good questions. There were many times throughout our meetings where I blanked on questions to ask our speakers and I often felt awkward in the pauses. As we went on, I grew stronger at researching ahead of time via Google/LinkedIn and preparing questions to create a better conversational flow. I built note-taking habits and created connections between my prior knowledge and new content. And as we met more new community members, I drew parallels between their business development solutions and recommendations we will suggest in Carrigart. Furthermore, I feel that once we have boots on the ground in Ireland, I will have a much better idea as to what exactly their needs are. We have largely spoken in hypotheticals until now, but I am excited to talk to local business owners and use our research to help them in any way that I can. I would say I most look forward to that community interaction. Not only will I be able to understand another culture from a tourist’s perspective, but I will actually be able to contribute to their community in some small way. I am excited for the coffee chats, breaktime meetings, and informal daily conversations. Ireland here we come!
