On Tuesday, we started our morning at the Fanad Lighthouse, situated in the Northern part of the Republic of Ireland. We were able to go to the very top, although it was a little scary to travel up the steps because they were very tightly packed and thin. While driving to the lighthouse, it was explained that many people traveled from Fanad down to Carrigart for the necessities and to meet with friends. Many people from Fanad live in very peaceful communities, and Carrigart allows them to keep that same peace, but with an added level of ease in purchasing and socializing. Then, we visited Mulroy Meadow Farms, and were led through their farms and all the work they do to provide healthy, nourishing food to their surrounding area. Following that, we visited Gáinne Mór Alpacas, an Alpaca Farm in Downings, a town near Carrigart. We then finished our day by visiting the Tyrconnell Tribune, the local newspaper of Carrigart and the surrounding area. It was unique in the sense that the way the newspaper is made is an almost ancient process that the Tribune might be one of the last to continue using. But, they are a beloved part of their local communities. Almost every house has the newspaper sitting on the dining room table, a sign of an important icon for the community. People will often call with their own news, hoping to help the writers ease their long days. I believe that this type of model would not translate well into American culture, while it is a very positive type of media, America is very much in a technical age, one where newspapers have to fight to stay alive.
