Howth is full of Growth

Visiting the village town of Howth today was a nice change of scenery compared to the bustling inner-city of Dublin.

This morning, we bused into the city and then took the train to Howth, which took almost a full hour. It was a little exhausting, but it was worth every minute. Once we got to the town, we walked through Howth’s market, and I bought a BBQ Chicken Wrap. While it’s not Irish Cuisine, it was delicious.

The market was a cool place, and helps benefit the town as well. Howth is somewhat of a tourist attraction for those ambitious enough to trek the hour it takes to get there. However, it is also is very suburban. The main street and the market account for its net income per year. Outside of its main street, the village is a suburb of Dublin and reminded me of the calm, local streets in my home township.

After exploring the market, the group ventured on a cliff walk around the edge of the island. The sights were gorgeous. The trail looped around a small mountain and ended at the summit point. The hike reminded me of my days in Scouts. The entire hike took about two hours; some parts were rocky and the trails were crowded, so we took our time.

Once we reached the summit, I could see the entire city of Dublin and its bay; From the peak, I could see all of the economic development in the Docklands, but also was able to see the suburban areas around the city. The skies were clear, but my phone camera could not capture everything. I might have to invest in a better camera soon!

After our hike, we made our way back to Griffith for a relaxed night on campus. Tomorrow is a big day. We are going to see the quarter-final game of Gaelic Football!
