Hello everyone! My name is Sam Delmont and I will be traveling to London for six weeks this summer through the global business institute. I am very excited to have the opportunity to expand my knowledge on international accounting through both a class and an internship in the city.
Originally, I am from Lititz, Pennsylvania which is a small town just outside the city of Lancaster. Coming from such a small town I have always wanted to see the world. I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel to ten different countries all which have exposed me to various cultures and opened my eyes in different ways.
I am currently completing my sophomore year with a double major in Accounting and Business Information Systems, minors in Political Science and Economics and the Certificate for Leadership and Ethics. I chose business and more specifically accounting because I enjoyed that it has set rules and guidelines, but it is still constantly evolving and changing. There are specific frameworks to operate under, but aspects of the field are constantly developing and expanding so I will always be learning.
In addition to my academic life I also have an on-campus job as a student worker for Faculty Affairs for the School of Medicine. Outside of work and class, I am also involved in the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega (APO) and I am co-Vice President of Finance for the University of Pittsburgh Accounting Association (UPAA).
This summer I am participating in the global business institute in London specifically focused on International Accounting Issues. I will be taking a course on International Accounting Issues while also completing a six week long internship in the finance department of a company.
Through this experience I hope to grow personally, academically, and professionally. Personally, I hope to expand my cultural competence by immersing myself fully into this culture. Before departing I have begun researching the city and current events, especially Brexit which is a “hot topic” at the moment. Through this research I hope to be able to go to London with background knowledge that will allow me to make the most out of my experience. I hope to continue growing my cultural competence while abroad by starting everyday with an open-mind and being willing and able to adapt to the unexpected during my time abroad.
Academically I hope to utilize what I have learned in the classroom in my internship. Having the opportunity to work in the finance department of a business will give me the chance to see what I have learned in the classroom in action. I feel that I learn more by doing something so utilizing the skills I have learned until this point will allow me to see how they are transferable. I believe that once I return, I will be able to take my knowledge of how the skills I have learned are transferable and be able to grow and expand on them once back in the classroom in the fall.
Professionally, I hope to gain experience working in a professional setting on a finance team. While I currently hold a position in an office, I do think it will be an eye-opening experience to work alongside and learn from professionals in the career path I wish to pursue. I hope to gain insight into the International Accounting Standards and business conduct in London as this will be valuable knowledge if I would pursue a career with a global firm.
All in all, I am very excited for the opportunity to be part of this global business institute in London because I think I will grow personally, academically, and professionally. I think this will be an eye-opening experience where I can fully immerse myself in another culture as I will be living there for an extended period.
