London, Here I Come

Hi everyone! My name is Deven Herbine and I am ready to take off on one of the most exciting adventures of a lifetime.  I am from forty-five minutes outside of Philly (I know, how original – Go Birds!) and somehow brought myself to the beautiful Pittsburgh.  I am 21 years old majoring in marketing at Pitt CBA.  I am part of Pitt’s D1 gymnastics team, where we train for about four hours a day, five days a week.  Yes, very time consuming, but I couldn’t imagine college any other way.  I love it!  While I’m not practicing, in class, or sleeping, I like to spend my time either exploring Pittsburgh or volunteering for the community.  I recently volunteered for two children’s organizations and had the best time.  I was given the opportunity to read a children’s book to second graders at an elementary school through the 2nd & 7 Foundation where we then gave every student a book to bring home and keep.  Then, I was able to teach the importance of teamwork to an entire classroom full of children at the Boys and Girls Club in Shadyside.  Working with kids and volunteering for the community is a passion of mine, and I hope to expand on that later in my career.

My sister studied abroad in Seville, Spain for an entire spring semester her junior year of college.  She was the first kid in our family to ever go abroad, and let me tell you, I was so jealous.  I knew from then on, I needed to study abroad.  I have never left the country, nor have even left the east coast, so hopping on a plane and travelling seven hours to a different country by myself is going to be exhilarating.  I leave in exactly nineteen days! London, here I come.

This summer I will be participating in the Global Business Institute: London Summer 1 program.  I will be doing an internship (if my VISA gets in on time) and taking a class.  I chose this program because it’s only six weeks and I need to get back to Pitt and practice!  Also, my roommate did this program last year and loved it.  She had a really good experience and couldn’t say enough good things about it.  London is a beautiful city, and I can’t wait to explore and learn as much as I can about its culture. Professionally, this will be my first internship experience.  I feel as if I am prepared for this because the skills Pitt Business has taught me in the classroom have been useful, and I am ready to apply them to the workplace!  Developing my professional skills in a way that I can’t in a classroom will be something I hope to take away from this program.  I am ready to work hard and represent Pitt Business well in London this summer!

Next time you hear from me, I will be abroad for the first time ever!  I have never been more excited for a class or a job in my life.  Wish me luck.

Thanks for reading, and as always, Hail to Pitt.
