Reflecting on Study Abroad

Wow! I can’t believe that my international experience in Sydney, Australia has already come and gone.  This has been an amazing semester packed with experiences.  It’s hard to summarize everything I did, however, there are a number of standouts that I would like to highlight.  First, I was able to take classes on Australian culture while fully immersed.  Being able to apply what I learned in class immediately during my daily life was fascinating, and these classes helped me to better appreciate my temporary home.  During the semester, I also had the opportunity to work with a financial startup in the heart of Sydney’s central business district.  I learned so much from this fantastic work experience, and the knowledge I gained will be useful during classes at Pitt Business and for my future career.  One of the things I really enjoyed about this internship was the responsibility of my role – because the company is so small, my work had a large, tangible impact.  I was able to use many of the skills I learned in my Pitt accounting classes to successfully complete my internship, and actually putting these skills to use was a great way to better grasp important concepts.  However, my trip abroad was not all work – during my free time, I was able to travel to many bucket list locations around Australia, and this really set my trip apart from any other experiences I have had.  After work, I was able to relax at the beach, and on the weekends, I was able to travel to many different destinations.  I visited the Great Barrier Reef, which was especially important because it may not exist in the future.  Over spring break, I traveled to the south island of New Zealand where I backpacked across some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.  In Sydney, I traveled in every direction to many different beaches and national parks, all of which were breathtaking.  By going out of my comfort zone and moving across the world, I was able to develop myself in the three key aspects of academic, professional, and personal growth.  As I mentioned, I had a completely unique academic experience that gave me a new cultural perspective.  Professionally, I gained crucial experience in my major and learned what it means to be a team player in a startup.  Personally, I had an unforgettable adventure that I will cherish for the rest of my life.  I would like to thank the Pitt Business Scholarship Fund for providing me with the means to pursue this incredible opportunity, as without this assistance it may not have been possible for me to take part in this life-changing experience.
