To the rhododendron tree,

To the rhododendron tree,

You remind me of home, for in my yard I have another species of rhododendron. While she is a bush you are more of tree. Did you know there are over 1,000 species of rhododendron in the world? It is crazy to believe. Regardless, it is nice to see something so familiar so far from PA.

Today in class one of my peers gave his presentation on authentic leadership. Being authentic is by no means an easy thing to do. Take Instagram for example. Any one of my posts could represent the person I want you to see rather than who I really am. You as a viewer wouldn’t know the difference unless you actually spent time with me. This can carry over to any setting such as when one is leading.

Leadership I have learned is a tricky skill. It is never perfected and always changing. When I lead I would like to adopt some part of the authentic leadership theory. I want to show my real self to the people who follow me. I am generally a happy person but I often find myself getting so caught up in my work that I lose my smile in a way. Another aspect of authentic leadership is focusing on the long term. Two of my skills as defined by the strength finders test where futuristic and developer. I am excited for the future and often find myself planning months, even years down the road. Because of this I can see the benefit in helping develop those around me as they succeed so will I.

When talking to others about my study abroad class on leadership prior to May I got the question– “If you are all leaders, who will lead?” To be honest, I was a bit worried about this. Since starting this program though, I have learned that a leader doesn’t always have to be the one out in front. A leader can also be someone within the group. One example is making sure everyone’s voice is being heard when a decision is being made. In today’s activity we set a new record for our instructor by coming up with a concrete plan and making sure everyone’s voice was heard.

So, can I put leader as one of my skills on my resume after I finish this program? I honestly don’t think I ever will.
