Commuting to School and Work in Sydney

My daily commute to school everyday is pretty easy in terms of mode of transportation. The CAPA Center where my classes are is about a 15 minute walk from the Oaks Goldsborough Apartments where I am living. The walk to class is pretty straightforward as most of the walk is down one street. On the days that I have class, I usually start at either 9:30 or 10:00 AM so as I am walking to class, I see a lot of traffic from cars commuting into the city on the other side of the harbor. It is a pretty aesthetically pleasing because I can see the skyline of Sydney as I am walking, and the weather is usually nice making it even more pleasant to be outside. In comparison to my commute to classes at Pitt, the walk is pretty similar but in between classes at CAPA I usually have to stay pretty close to the building and there isn’t usually a lot of places to go and hang out in the area. Whereas at Pitt, I can usually hang around the William Pitt Union in between classes since it is in a central location to all of the buildings on campus.

When it comes to getting to work, I have a pretty simple and easy commute. There is a bus I take from a stop that is right around the corner from where we are living at the Oaks Goldsborough Apartments. The bus ride is about 10 minutes and goes into downtown. Once I’m off the bus, I walk about 3 blocks to the building that my internship is at. Usually in the morning, the buses run about every 5-10 minutes. I have to be at my internship by 9:30. The biggest piece of advice that I have for commuting to internships in Sydney, is to always give yourself about an extra 15 minutes to plan for complications that come with the morning commute in Sydney. There have been a few occurrences where the buses can be packed during the morning rush hour that one may pass you because it is already filled with passengers. And one of the biggest things that the Australian workplace values is punctuality. The last thing that you want to be is late while you are still getting adjusted to the area because you weren’t completely prepared. Outside of the occasional crowd issues, the public transportation system is very reliable and dependable throughout the week. There are schedules posted at most bus stops so you can plan for exactly when the buses are coming.
