A challenging part of Irish history is the potato famine, also known as the Great Hunger. It started in 1845 and ended in 1852, but still has an effect on their culture now. It dropped their population significantly and also caused a large amount of immigration out of Ireland. Some also theorize that it was the start to the eventual Irish partition. I am also interested to see how the split of Ireland is talked about and if there is still any Northern Irish culture in the Republic of Ireland.
