Balancing classes with a part-time internship can be challenging. In my program, I have to work 20 hours a week at my internship while also attending classes and completing my homework on time. Since I work for Pitt Athletics as an intern during the semester at home, I have some experience in managing this type of schedule. My schedule in London has been fairly easy to manage since my classes meet once a week for three hours each, and I work remotely 2 out of 3 days a week.
In London, I am working for London Rangers Football Club as a marketing intern for all aspects of their organization. This organization is compiled of the football club, an education system called New Level Academy, community outreach programs, and an accommodation for players trying to get on their feet. During a typical remote work day, I am designing graphics and scheduling posts for the football club’s Instagram and Twitter pages. I also spend a lot of time in communication with the team’s coach and manager to get information on the next game, photos from previous games, and background information on the players. In addition to designing marketing content for the football club, I also design flyers and pamphlets for New Level Academy, an education program that provides core classes in math and English for students who struggle in mainstream school systems.
In this industry, I found it is crucial to be creative and always try to think of new ideas or ways to structure social media posts. I also found that it is important to be open to feedback and suggestions on any marketing content. Business in London also has its differences from business in America. In my experience, people in British culture enjoy small talk before any meeting or at the beginning of an email. It is standard to discuss your weekend plans or how your day is going before talking about any work topics. In general, people in British culture enjoy going out to a pub or restaurant after work or class with their students or coworkers. I feel that this is a much more relaxed way of doing business than many companies in America. In marketing, I found that it is also important to be conscious of spelling differences and word choices between American English and British English. This industry requires patience in communication with others and with receiving feedback and engagement on social media.
Leveraging my Clifton Strengths can help me be successful in this industry. One of my strengths is self-assurance which means I am confident in my ability to meet new challenges, deliver, and have good judgment. This strength can help me be successful in marketing because I have to be confident in what I am designing and posting. I can also leverage my strategic strength which allows me to sort through the clutter and find the best route or option. This is important in marketing because there are a million different ways to tackle social media posts and designs, so it is crucial for me to find the best route for London Rangers and focus my energy on it.
