Dear Past Me

Dear Past Elise,

I remember what it felt like to board the plane to Italy with nothing but two suitcases, a backpack, and a vision of what it would be like to live and study abroad in such a vibrant and historic country. It is amazing to think back on the journey I have taken since then. I have experienced such a wide range of cultures and customs that have greatly impacted who I am today. I have become adept at navigating so many different social situations and learning to find common ground with people from all over the world.

What has surprised me most about living abroad in Italy is how easy it has been to make new friends, even when we don’t speak the same language. I have developed a tremendous amount of empathy and understanding for different cultures, and I know that these are the kinds of skills that will benefit me for the rest of my life.

Looking back, I am amazed at how far I have come. I have become more confident and independent, having to navigate through a foreign country without the help of my parents. I’ve had to make difficult decisions, take risks, and step out of my comfort zone. I’m so proud of myself for the courage and strength I’ve shown while living here. It has been a truly life-altering experience, and I am so grateful for it. I am thankful for all the friends I made, all the sights I saw, and the moments I shared with the locals. I want you, my past self, to know that the experiences gained from living and studying abroad are invaluable.

I encourage you to take the time to appreciate the little moments. Life in Italy can be hectic, but being present and savoring the moments – from watching the sunset in Piazzale Michelangelo to saying yes to a last minute trip to Rome– has made it that much more fulfilling. I ask you past self to not forget to be open to change. Things don’t always go according to plan, and it’s important to remember that it’s okay to make mistakes and that the path you choose doesn’t have to be perfect. Life is a journey, and the best part of it is that you never know what the next step holds. I hope that you never forget the lessons you’ve learned and that you continue to grow and explore the world.

Sincerely,

Present Me
