Note to Self

Eric,

This global experience was life changing! I have learned so much about myself and other people along this journey. One thing that you should know is: it is incredibly important to get out of your comfort zone. Putting yourself in uncomfortable situations is the best way to grow. Even though it’s difficult and sometimes scary, the outcomes are always the best. Do not go where all the Americans go! Although you knew not to do this already (thankfully), it is very important. These places will inhibit you from experiencing Florentine culture because they are huge bubbles. I have made so many new friends and connections that I will cherish by staying off the beaten path. Through speaking with locals, I have gotten a glimpse of the pace and way of life in Florence. It’s important to understand their views because they keep the city alive!

I wish I could stay here longer to strengthen the relationships I have made. It took until the end of the program to really feel like I was starting to get immersed in the Florentine way of life. I wish I knew how long this was going to take. Even though I have done everything in my power to talk to locals, go to local places, and walk around residential areas, it took two months to feel a comfortable in my environment. This of course is not a bad thing it is just important to note that fostering relationships and experiencing culture takes time and patience. They will come naturally and develop at their own pace.

Something that is very surprising is how open and accepting the locals are. I have been playing drums at the Jazz Club every week for almost 14 weeks and I have conversed with many local musicians. They are all so supportive and welcoming. They love listening to music and always allow me to play with them. They always talk to me after the jam sessions and are interested in who I am and why I’m in Florence. Their kindness has changed me both as a person and as a musician. I have gotten very close to a few of them and I know we will stay in touch for years to come! This means so much to me because I now have a small group of friends I can always visit in Florence.
