So Far in Florence…

Ciao! My name is Cara Lynch and I am a rising senior majoring in marketing at Pitt. I am a member of the Panther Lady Lacrosse Club and I held a role as Business Manager this past year. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share a glimpse into my life as I embark on an exciting new adventure abroad.

This summer, I am studying in Florence, Italy through the University of Pittsburgh’s Global Business Institute. During this six week program, I am taking two classes: Cross Cultural Psychology and Oil Painting. I specifically chose to study in Florence for a variety of reasons. Florence has a rich cultural heritage as it is the birthplace of the Renaissance! The city is bursting with history, art, and authentic cuisine, offering a dynamic environment to study in. Florence is also known to have a lively student community, which eased my apprehension on studying abroad.

My initial impression of the city was that it is BEAUTIFUL. Once I exited the Florence train station, I knew 6 weeks was not enough time and that I would have to make the most out of my days here. Since living here for 3 weeks so far, I expected the novelty to wear off, however I am still in awe of how amazing this city is. There is something new to experience every day whether that is trying a new restaurant, exploring museums and historical sights, or browsing local outdoor markets. Florence is very walkable which makes getting around and exploring a breeze. Even though it is a large city with many tourists passing through daily, the city is also very clean.

I have adjusted well to everyday life. My biggest concern about studying abroad was that I was doing it alone. However, that has been the best decision for myself and my experience. I have met so many different people and have made relationships I would not have made if I chose to stay within my comfort zone. I meet someone new every day! I also have amazing roommates and living situation. It’s crazy to think that I just met these people and now I’m traveling the world with them!

Gaining a larger global perspective and personal development were two goals I set for myself. By traveling here by myself, I have become more independent and confident in myself to navigate difficult situations and problem solve. Being exposed to a new way of life has also helped me gain an appreciation for Italian culture and I am excited to continue to explore.

Ciao for now!
