Ciao! My name is Emily and I am currently a junior majoring in finance and business information systems as well as minoring in economics here at Pitt’s College of Business Administration. This semester, I am excited to be studying in Florence, Italy!
Choosing Florence as my study abroad destination was an easy decision for me. Italian culture has always interested me. Not to mention, I have always been a lover of Italian food, so I was eager to try a variety of traditional Italian cuisine. Additionally, I have always been interested in history and art, both subjects that I have not had time to pursue in my academic schedule at Pitt. Florence offers a perfect opportunity for this, with its historic architecture and countless works of art. Now, with the opportunity to live and study in the heart of Tuscany, I am eager to deepen my understanding and appreciation for the traditions that make this country so unique.
One of my main goals for my semester abroad is to strengthen my sense of cultural awareness and broaden my perspective of the world as it pertains to other environments and traditions. One of the main reasons I chose to study abroad was to step out of my comfort zone. Just being here, I am accomplishing this goal, and I hope to continue to try new things throughout the semester to further this goal.
Upon arrival in Florence, it is apparent that the city is much different than Pittsburgh. The stark contrast between Pittsburgh and Florence was initially intimidating. However, after just two weeks, I am already much more comfortable with my surroundings. In the first few days, my roommates and I became familiar with the local markets, enjoying the fresh food that is not as easy to come by on our typical college campus. Exploring the city, we found that many of the small business owners are extremely welcoming to students studying abroad in Florence. I look forward to strengthening these relationships with locals and learning more about the city through them.
Being so far from home, it is comforting to know that many of my peers are right here with me in Florence. Although we are surrounded by locals in our apartment complex, I am living with three other girls from Pitt in my individual apartment. Having my friends right by my side throughout this experience has been a huge comfort.
I’m excited to see how this experience abroad will shape my personal perspective and contribute to my overall academic growth.
