It’s officially half way through the study abroad and it seems to get better every day. I’ve continued to explore Florence, but have also traveled to other cities and countries. I’ve tried authentic Florentine food, had dinner with an Italian family outside the city, and continued to explore the history of Florence. Each day is a new adventure here.
Being away for 7 weeks now, I can confidently say I am fully adjusted. I’ve settled into my schedule and have found a routine that works for me. In the beginning, it was definitely difficult. Adjusting to a new time zone, the language barrier, being away from family, and not knowing your surroundings is challenging. However, once the classes begin and you can find some structure in your day, things get easier. Some tips I would give would be trying to stay outside as much as possible in the beginning. Even with homesickness, pushing through and exploring the city you’re in, even by yourself, will not only help you get adjusted but also clear your mind.
Florence as a city is extremely easy to navigate. While there are taxis, buses, and metros connecting all parts of the city, I find myself walking almost everywhere. Most places I need to go are 10-15 minutes away, with the farthest parts I’ve walked to being 30. While the streets may be a little difficult to navigate at first, especially with the lack of sidewalks, I found myself quickly being able to understand the city. Florence is at the bottom of a valley split in half by the Arno river. Going on hikes and being surrounded by giant hills has been a super cool part of Florence that I didn’t originally expect. The only problem I’ve encountered is the difficulty getting from Florence to other places, specifically by plane. However, there are also tons of Tuscan towns nearby that can be visited for the day and help to develop a broader understanding of the area.
With midterms wrapped up, we now get a week of spring break. I’m excited to rest and have some time off from classes to recharge and get ready for the second half of the semester. While it’s been amazing, it can definitely be tiring. With traveling, class, and walking all over the city each day, it’s definitely important to take some time for yourself and find the ways you like to relax. Until next time!
