As I approach the halfway point of my semester abroad, I’ve begun to reflect upon the invaluable lessons I’ve learned throughout this experience. Immersing myself in a foreign country has exposed me to diverse cultures, languages, and worldviews, prompting profound personal growth. Amidst these enriching experiences, one lesson stands out: the vital importance of effective communication skills. Initially intimidating, the prospect of conversing with locals in their native language was a daunting challenge. However, I quickly recognized that embracing the discomfort was the only way to learn. Even though my broken Italian and American accent were quick to give me away, I found that locals were very encouraging when my friends and I attempted to converse in Italian, correcting our pronunciation and even answering our questions. By engaging in conversation and overcoming language barriers, I’ve come to appreciate the power of communication as a bridge between cultures. Going forward in my professional career, in such a globalized field like finance, I will most likely face multicultural environments where I will have to communicate with team members, clients, or stakeholders in other countries. My time abroad has strengthened both my confidence and ability to do so.

Navigating cross-cultural encounters during my time abroad has been an incredibly enriching experience. As someone who has always had a fascination for learning about diverse cultures and ways of life, whether through books, movies, or music, being fully immersed in a foreign culture has taken my understanding to a whole new level. Fortunately, the reception we’ve received from locals has been overwhelmingly welcoming, despite how obvious it is that we are American study abroad students. While initially daunting, I’ve found great joy in effortlessly exploring various Italian cities thanks to the efficient train system, allowing me to observe the daily routines of Italians firsthand.

One particularly memorable experience occurred one morning when my friends and I boarded a train alongside Italian middle school students on their way to class. Though I couldn’t comprehend their conversations, their lively energy and interactions provided a glimpse into what it would be like to grow up in Italy. This encounter served as a reminder of the universalities shared among cultures, despite the nuances that distinguish them. It reinforced my appreciation for the diversity of human experience and the richness that comes from embracing it firsthand.

Studying abroad has not only broadened my worldview by exposing me to diverse perspectives in my host country and other nations I’ve visited but has also prompted me to reflect on my own culture and identity. Among the most striking observations has been the remarkable fluency in English demonstrated by Europeans. Prior to embarking on my journey, I had heard that many individuals in Europe spoke English proficiently. However, it wasn’t until I encountered situations where I couldn’t converse in another’s native language, yet they effortlessly communicated in English, that I truly grasped the value of language acquisition. In the United States, it is far less common to speak more than one language fluently. These encounters have heightened my appreciation for language learning and further highlighted the importance of linguistic proficiency in forming meaningful connections across cultures.
