Ciao again! Studying abroad in Florence has been an enriching experience, not only academically but also personally. As I continue to immerse myself in Italian culture, I find myself developing various transferable skills and learning lessons in cross-cultural communication.
Flexibility is one of the skills I’ve constantly been using and have seen drastically develop since being here. From delayed and missed trains to eating dinner at 9:30PM, learning how to be flexible is essential when going abroad. I’ve learned to be adaptable when facing unexpected changes in plans, whether it’s due to language barriers or navigating unfamiliar environments. Every challenge I’ve faced here has tested my skills and given me a unique chance to think critically.
My communication skills are also evolving significantly, too. Even though English is spoken by most people here, I know that making the effort to converse in Italian fosters deeper connections with locals and gives me a more authentic experience. Whether it’s ordering a cappuccino or striking up a conversation at the Mercato Centrale, there are so many opportunities that have helped improve my communication skills and bridge cultural divides.
I have also learned so much about cross-cultural navigation. Interacting with locals and fellow program participants has allowed me to develop a deep appreciation for a new culture. In class and in real life, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of Italian customs and traditions. My Analyzing The Global City class has given me so much insight into the Florentine way of life that I see in person each day. Also, the opportunity to be paired with an Italian family has allowed me to see first hand how Italians operate and interact with the city.
These interactions have impacted my own identity in so many ways. They’ve really prompted me to reflect on my beliefs, values, and worldview. By embracing different cultural perspectives, I’ve become more open-minded and adaptable, qualities that I know will serve me well when I go back to Pitt and enter the workforce.
Studying abroad in Florence has already been a transformative experience. However, with only one month left, I can really see how I’m developing essential soft skills and navigating cross-cultural situations with much more confidence. From adaptability and communication to problem-solving and cultural understanding, every day is a new opportunity for growth and learning. As I continue to explore this incredible city and immerse myself in its culture, I’m looking forward to the last month and all it’s going to bring!
