Pre-Florence Note to Self

Dear Pre-departure Self,

As our program is winding down, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and share some insights with you about the journey we’ve been on. Brace yourself because what lies ahead is going to be one of the most life-changing experiences you have faced so far.

Florence has been an incredible teacher in adaptability. You’ll find yourself navigating unfamiliar cultures and facing uncertainties head-on. It’s challenging, no doubt, but it’s in these uncomfortable moments that you’ll experience the most growth. Embrace the discomfort. Even if you make mistakes and embarrass yourself in front of Italians, you will learn to adapt. It has been a great teacher in perspective. I feel like I have a way different perspective on life and the world in general. For example, I am way less attached to my belongings. Being forced to take a suitcase and live out of it for 3 months really teaches you that life is not about the things you have. This is a lesson I will take on in the rest of my life when I have the urge to buy unnecessary things.

Looking back, there are a couple of things I wish I’d understood sooner. Firstly, stay open-minded and flexible. Let go of expectations and be willing to roll with the punches. There will be a point that living in Italy will become a routine, as crazy as that sounds. Another thing I want you to know is that you will be meeting so many people from all around the world. In your internship you will be surrounded by a lot of diversity, and you will learn about cultural differences through these people.

What surprised me the most? How fast the time here has gone. Feels like yesterday I was in your shoes ready to leave. Take in all the experiences you can and don’t overwork yourself over small stuff. You will be expected to not waste a second of your time abroad. Make sure you give yourself time to rest early on your trip. Don’t burn yourself out and prioritize your health. Finally burn any list that you have and forget any expectation of Florence. Create your own bucket list and get lost in the city. The best adventures and lessons you will encounter are the unexpected ones.

So, as you prepare for this adventure, keep an open mind and a sense of curiosity. Embrace the uncertainty, lean into the challenges, and trust that every experience, good or bad. You’re about to embark on an unforgettable journey, and I couldn’t be more excited for you.

Best regards,

Your Future Self
