Buenos Dias! My name is Adit Mansury. I’m a Pitt psychology and business student, a rising junior, a native Ithacan, and an avid weightlifter. This summer, I will also be a marketing intern in Spain!
When I first came to Pitt, I chose to be a psych major. This is due to my outgoing nature. I’m fascinated by how I can apply principles of behavioral and social psychology to foster new relationships and strengthen pre-existing ones. As such, my desire to better understand the motivations and actions of my friends and peers led me to pursue psychology at Pitt.
That same desire is why I chose to add business as my second major after my first year of college. I’m drawn to business because of how critical social skills are in that field. How far I can go as a businessman is dependent on how easily I can form connections, which thankfully is one of my passions. In the workplace, I can do for a job what I enjoy doing in my free time, building trust and rapport, while applying what I’ve learnt in psychology.
Although I have yet to determine my specification, I will most likely choose human resources or marketing. Both focus more on the people side of business rather than the number side. Additionally, either field has ample opportunity to apply psychological findings of inter-group relations and personality traits while I’m recruiting, training a workforce, and designing a product to fit a target audience.
In addition to studying business and psychology, I am also pursuing Pitt’s Spanish language minor. Through my membership in the Frederick Honors College I am also working towards completing the business certificate in International Business to graduate with honors.
In my free time, I enjoy powerlifting at the gym as well as reading and spending time with friends. I also have been playing the guitar and taking lessons since the age of seven. I love all kinds of outdoor adventure sports such as kitesurfing and snowboarding. Beyond that, I like to think of myself as a good cook who makes an excellent medium rare steak.
My craving for physical activity has led me to participate in the Pitt bodybuilding and MMA clubs where I improve my overall physical condition, learn new things about both sports, and get to know people from diverse backgrounds with similar interests. I’m also a part of the Asian Student Association and a new member of SteelCitySherShaah, a hip-hop/bhangra dance team that competes weekly against other colleges and performs and popular events such as CMU Holi.
I come from a family of immigrant academics. My father is an Indonesian who immigrated to the U.S. to attend college here. My mother is a half-Japanese, half-Dutch second-generation who met my father in college. My father has been a professor for longer than I’ve been alive, and my mother is All-But-Ph.D who has retired from teaching Japanese history.
My professional experience is primarily volunteer work. My volunteer experience ranges from working with children between ages 5-15 to cleaning and reselling donated items. Through high school I volunteered at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, a community center that serves disadvantaged children. While there I assisted chemistry and drone classes among others and helped children develop their professional and interpersonal skills by facilitated structured play. I’ve also volunteered in my hometown at the Ithaca Reuse Center, where I worked with local citizens donating used clothes, household items, and electronics. I cleaned, organized, and maintained the storefront where those items were re-sold for charity.
I’ve also completed a managerial internship at the Hotel Legian Seminyak in Bali where I worked closely with upper management to learn core skills such as data entry and social media market while shadowing employees and learning how each department cooperates in an elite hospitality company. After graduating from high school, I also worked part-time at Firehouse Subs, keeping the store clean, providing quality service to customers, and fulfilling food and beverage orders.
During Pitt’s international internship program in Madrid this summer I’ll be interning at Smile and Learn, an NGO that develops online education initiatives. Smile and Learn takes advantage of their English and Spanish native speakers to create education modules targeting Spanish speakers learning in the U.S. The website and all of it’s subjects are also available in four other European languages. The company’s website has a wide range of subjects for students to learn, from math and science to basic programming essentials. The company’s products are intended for learners from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
I will be working in the marketing department developing a back-to-school initiative for the next two months. While there I hope to improve my interpersonal skills so I can better network and mesh with my coworkers and other professionals to benefit my career in the future. Additionally the experience I gain while interning at Smile and Learn will be invaluable to my future career even if I don’t work within marketing thanks to the technical and leadership skills I will build upon.
I’m also excited to improve my Spanish language proficiency so that I can work in a Spanish-speaking country after I graduate or serve the millions of Spanish speakers in the U.S. Furthermore, my ability to live independently and adapt to a foreign setting will both improve exponentially and prove to be invaluable to my plans of working abroad after finishing my undergrad. Lastly, I can’t wait to learn what it’s like to live as a Spanish citizen to better understand the diverse peoples that I share the world with.
I’m embarking on what is thus far my greatest adventure yet, and I can’t wait to see how my location and how I change. You’ll be with me the whole way, so be sure to stay up to date!
¡Nos vemos pronto!
