Studying abroad in Florence has been an amazing experience, opening my eyes to how rich of Italian culture. From the piazzas to the tranquil countryside, every moment is an opportunity to learn and grow. This week, I’ve been reflecting on the deeper aspects of Italian culture and how they resonate with my own values.
One aspect of Italian culture that I identify with deeply is the strong emphasis on family. In Italy, family isn’t just important—it’s central to everyday life. Meals are often lengthy, multi-course affairs where everyone gathers to share not just food but stories and laughter. This resonates with my own family traditions back home, where every Sunday I have a special dinner with my family.
However, not everything has been easy to adapt to. The Italian concept of time, for example, is much more fluid than what I’m used to. Coming from a culture that values punctuality, I found it challenging to adjust to the more relaxed approach to schedules here. In addition to the difference in meal times, for instance there was one time when I arrived to have dinner at 6pm at this restaurant and they weren’t open for dinner until 7.
To navigate these cross-cultural situations, I’ve made an effort to learn the language and engage with locals. Speaking Italian, even imperfectly, has opened many doors and allowed me to connect on a deeper level. These interactions have profoundly impacted my identity, teaching me the value of communicating with others and being patient.
As I continue my journey in Florence, I’m constantly learning and evolving. The challenges of adapting to a new culture have been outweighed by the personal growth I’ve experienced. Embracing Italian culture has not only broadened my horizons but also enriched my understanding of what it means to be part of a global community.
See you next week!
