Adjusting to the Florentine Way

Now being a good ways into my program, I have been able to recognize what I’ve been struggling to adapt to here in Florence. It has been difficult at times to not feel homesick but I try and remind myself that its a normal feeling and often one that can be alleviated.

I have had to adapt to the Italian way of getting around here in Italy. For one, walking here is the main form of transportation which is preferred for me but the sidewalks and streets are very narrow and can be difficult to get around people and cars when needed. I’ve adapted to this by giving myself ample time to get where I need to go and take ways off the typical busy streets. This has allowed me to explore more of Florence without really trying which I have enjoyed.

Italy has different dining expectations from those of the US. Back home, I am used to feeling catered to at a restaurant and sometimes even rushed out. Here that is not a common experience to face as following ordering it is uncommon to see your server again and to conclude your meal you must ask for the check by flagging them down. I’ve learned to prefer the slower-paced dining experience as it allows for more connection with your dining partners and allows for ample time to relax with friends.

An adjustment I’ve had to make with classes here is mainly the length. 3-hour classes can feel very long but I’ve enjoyed the time collaborating with other classmates and being done the class time for the week after one session.

Being this far away on my own has been a challenge sometimes but I’ve been learning to manage these feelings. I find it most difficult when I am awake here and others back at home are asleep. The time difference also makes it challenging for calling family and friends as the timing is often inconvenient for one party. I’ve been managing by spending more time with my roommates and talking long walks listening to music to enjoy the scenes of the city. This has not only been peaceful but has allowed me to better navigate Florence. I have found I am the most comfortable when I am familiar with where I am going. Trying new places in the city allows me to best unlock new areas and cuisines.

I am eager to continue growing within my new surroundings and am excited to update again soon!
