Moving to Sydney for a semester abroad has been an exciting and eye-opening experience but does come with challenges. From adapting to Australian culture to navigating a new city, I’ve had to step outside my comfort zone in ways I never expected.
One of the biggest adjustments has been the workplace culture at my internship. In the U.S., professional settings are much more structured and formal, but in Australia the work environment is much more relaxed. Conversations are casual, and hierarchy isn’t emphasized. While I appreciate the laid-back atmosphere, it took time to adjust my communication style and understand workplace expectations. To manage this, I’ve been observing my colleagues, asking lots of questions, and finding a balance between professionalism and the easygoing Aussie approach.
Academically, studying in a new environment has also been an adjustment. My classes are much longer than what I’m used to, so making sure I stay engaged and listening has been quite a challenge. Luckily, we get breaks during our classes which allows for a nice reset.
Outside of work and class, settling into Sydney life has been both exciting and challenging. I’ve travelled before however, this is not only the longest, but also the farthest I’ve been away from home. Staying connected with family and friends across time zones has been tough but having great roommates that I get along with has helped me feel more at home. Learning to navigate Sydney’s public transport system took some trial and error, but apps like Google Maps and the Opal card system have made getting around much easier. I’ve truly learned to trust myself and appreciate ever experience.
Despite these challenges, I’ve embraced the experience with an open mind. Every obstacle has been a learning opportunity, helping me grow personally and professionally. As I continue this journey, I’m excited to see how much more I can explore and learn from my time in Sydney.
