Note to My Pre-Departure Self

Dear pre-departure self,

You’re about to head to out for four of the most incredible months of your life. Florence has been one of the most enriching experiences up until now. Over the course of the semester, you are going to grow and change so much, learning about yourself and the world at large. Since coming to Florence, I have picked up so many valuable skills and, more importantly, life lessons. Whether in filmmaking, business, culture, food, language, or people, this time abroad is going to be profoundly impactful for you.

Now, nearing the end of my time in Italy, I wish I had come here knowing there would be more challenges than I previously expected. There are going to be numerous challenges you face in navigating your way around Florence, your program, and your internship. Time management is going to be essential, but so is making time for yourself and being willing to explore more and try new things. Some of the best moments of this time abroad will come from spontaneous decisions you make or last-minute changes of plans. Being open to these moments as they come and learning to go with the flow will only make the time even better.

What most surprised me about our global experience was just how much there is to see and how little time we truly have here. Even though I know you’ve been waiting to travel abroad since freshman year, the time you have in Florence is finite. Take the moments as they come and be prepared for a few months of fast-paced life to take it all in. That being said, don’t be afraid to take it slow from time to time, and make sure to savor every minute of it. This semester abroad will be an incredible time.
