Tears of Joy & Farewell: Closing the Chapter with GSL Bolivia!

Throughout my recent service-learning experience with CEOLI in Bolivia, I have gained several invaluable insights, deepened my understanding of cross-cultural collaboration, and honed skills critical to my professional and personal development. This final reflection summarizes my entire experience, highlighting key lessons, transferable skills, the importance of relationships, how I plan to pitch this experience professionally, essential advice for future groups, and additional reflective insights during my time in and out of Bolivia.

VALUABLE LESSONS LEARNED

One key lesson from this experience was the profound significance of adaptability and cultural sensitivity as points of discomfort did arise while I was abroad in Bolivia. For starters, I came into the project with open-minded expectations focused primarily on creating immediate and tangible deliverables for CEOLI. However, our class discussions and assigned readings on sustainable community engagement, points of discomfort, and the importance of reflection reshaped my perspective toward service learning and the rest of the project with CEOLI and AllPeopleBeHappy. I learned that meaningful and lasting impacts stem from careful listening, patience, and a commitment to collaborative planning. The readings and class discussions on cross-cultural competence emphasized that understanding cultural differences is critical for effective international service work within a new country, allowing me to shift from a task-oriented mindset to one prioritizing relationship-building and shared goals with the client and the rest of my teammates.

Another important lesson I learned was recognizing the complexities of sustainable international development and the importance of reflection. Through in-class discussions and other course readings, it became clear that genuine community development transcends quick solutions, requiring instead an investment in local empowerment and sustainability. Our team discussions often revisited the challenge of balancing immediate assistance with the necessity of promoting CEOLI’s long-term self-sufficiency. From the first two blogs originally, my team and I wanted to develop more cross-cultural communication, and it has certainly been a major accomplishment after completing this project.  This accomplishment significantly influenced our project strategy, shifting our efforts towards other activities that provided lasting value rather than temporary fixes.

A crucial transferable skill I developed during this course and that I am going to take away for the future is effective cross-cultural adaptability. Interacting with CEOLI’s students, staff, and community members challenged me to cultivate sensitivity, clarity, and active listening in communication. This experience presented the importance of acknowledging cultural contexts, body language, and non-verbal cues in establishing mutual understanding. In my future professional life, this skill is incredibly valuable, as it will allow me to work effectively in diverse teams, manage international projects, and engage sensitively and productively with global clients.

Reflecting on the importance of relationships, international service work of this nature is so valuable and unforgettable. Pitt’s existing relationship with CEOLI provided significant advantages rather than disadvantages. The established trust between Pitt and CEOLI created a wide variety of initial acceptance, openness, and willingness from CEOLI to engage deeply with our group’s activities. This mutual trust accelerated the process of project implementation and enhanced our overall effectiveness. However, we also encountered challenges related to pre-existing assumptions and expectations built on past interactions. In the beginning, we felt a bit lost, but by addressing these vulnerabilities with Steph and Ariel, our AllPeopleBeHappy program guide, we maintained ongoing communication and managed expectations through transparency and honesty throughout the rest of the project. Our dedication to maintaining open dialogues and asking as many questions has strengthened our partnership, ultimately benefiting both our deliverables and the broader institutional relationship.

Continuing the project significantly enhanced Pitt’s relationship with CEOLI. Our group’s intentional effort to listen actively, respond empathetically, and engage respectfully contributed positively to the existing partnership. As we completed our tasks and adapted our plans based on feedback and real-time needs, we demonstrated our genuine commitment to CEOLI’s mission. The tangible results of our collaboration reinforced CEOLI’s confidence in the value of Pitt’s involvement and established a stronger foundation for future collaborative projects.

INTO THE FUTURE

Next, in a professional interview, I would pitch this experience by highlighting examples of my development of skills in international collaboration, adaptability, and sustainable project management. I would articulate clearly how my direct engagement with CEOLI enhanced my cross-cultural competence, enabling me to navigate diverse environments confidently. I would highlight specific examples of overcoming challenges, such as adjusting project plans in response to feedback from CEOLI stakeholders or creatively addressing resource limitations. Additionally, I would underscore my increased ability to balance strategic planning with sensitivity to cultural dynamics, which is invaluable for positions involving global teams and international partnerships.

In my experience, I hope that future groups that are engaging in similar projects will benefit from my three critical points of advice. First, it is essential to thoroughly understand the cultural and historical context of the community and organization involved. This understanding involves active listening, thorough research, and openness to learning directly from community members. This openness serves as the foundation for learning about your clients and their cultural differences. Second, flexibility and adaptability are meaningful to implement. International projects rarely proceed exactly as planned, and the capacity to respond constructively to unexpected changes significantly impacts project success. Third, proactively strengthening existing relationships through clear and consistent communication should be prioritized. Open dialogue helps mitigate misunderstandings and ensures that the client or community’s needs are met and perspectives remain on track to the project’s objectives.

FINAL ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS & REMARKS

Some additional reflections on this unforgettable experience highlight the overall personal impact of my time with CEOLI. Witnessing firsthand the resilience, creativity, and passion of the CEOLI community deeply inspired me. Their strong commitment to providing opportunities and support for children and young adults with disabilities reinforced the importance of service work that empowers and elevates communities. Next, this experience heightened my awareness of the global inequalities impacting access to education, healthcare, and social integration opportunities. My engagement with CEOLI made me realize the necessity of advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize inclusion and support marginalized populations worldwide.

To conclude, this service-learning experience at CEOLI was incredibly transformative! The lessons learned, particularly around adaptability, cultural sensitivity, sustainable development, and the importance of relationships, will undoubtedly guide my future path. The transferable skills developed, especially cross-cultural communication, will have the most impact on my professional goals, enhancing my capacity to contribute effectively within diverse and globalized professional environments. I want to give my final thanks to Bryan Schultz, Steph Spirk, Ronald, Ariel Flores, my teammates, and all of the wonderful individuals that I have interacted with and helped me through this unforgettable and rewarding journey. Best wishes to CEOLI and the future GSL group heading towards Bolivia next year. I am certain that you all will do amazing in the future!
