Hello! My name is Alina Korathu and I’m a rising junior here at the University of Pittsburgh. I am currently studying Political Science with my primary field of focus being in comparative politics. I am also interested in American politics and human rights. In high school my interest in human rights stemmed from my work i did with Church organizations and NGOs helping raise money for Afghan refugees. At my time at the University of Pittsburgh i, along with another university of Pittsburgh student worked with Dr. Erica Edwards to create a mini lectures series about a series of topics concerning Europe. I was a co moderator and organizor for 1 lecture and co moderatoered another lecture. The topic for one of the lectures was democratic backsliding and the rule of law. Another was Europe’s youth on Democracy. Being apart of this lecture series gave me a valuable insight on the inner working of the European Union as well as an opportunity to talk and learn from European Scholars. During my summer before my Sophmore Year of college i also worked at my local McDonalds. I mostly spent my time there manning the drive through, as well as handing out the orders to the costumers. Working there has taught me how to move in a fast paced environment and also taught me important communicating skills. Aside from academics and my professional life, i am an avid reader. However, because i am a political science major i already have to read alot so sometimes i do have to push myself to read outside of the classroom. My favorite genre is fantasy, science fiction and i also love mystery novels, especially books written by Agatha Christie. I have a love for history, especifically ancient history and learning about different ancient cultures. Im my free times sometimes i will sit down and watch history documentaries. Other activities which i do during my free time is go fishing with my dad. My hometown in the suburbs of Phully is not really situated next to an ocean but we do live near a lake. During the late spring and summer season me and my dad go fishing and it is one activity which i love doing. For the next two months, starting from May 20th to July 19th i will be participating in the International Internship Program in Berlin. I am excited to be staying at the Citadines Aprt Hotel in the Kurfurstendamm neighborhood in Berlin with a group of Pitt students who are also in the same program as me. There are a myriad of reasons as to why i chose this specific program. I believe that it is a package deal and you get so many good things out of it. Firstly, this two month study abroad program gives you six credits which can either go towards your major or the school which you are in. Second, i have never travelled to Europe and i feel that being able to live in Berlin is honestly amazing because you can travel to other European cities and it is a major political and economic center. Another reason why i chose the city of Berlin specifically is because i had heard that majority of the city’s inhabitants spoke English, and as someone who doesnt really know any German at all. This city was the prefect place for people like me. Another final reason was because Berlin has a lot of things going on in the economic and political realm. And as someone who is quite interested in politics and fascinated by other countries political governing structures. I saw this internship as the perfect way to get to learn more about the German political system. There are quite a few things which I hope to gain from this internship personally, academically, and professionally. This is actually my first professional internship..so I hope that I can learn how to navigate the workplace for the first time and see what areas which I excel at and which areas I can work to improve on. Academically I am excited to learn more about German politics. My internships allows me to sit in on lectures where professors will discuss Germany and how it went from fascism to democracy in less than hundred years. I hope that by sitting in on these lectures I can understand fully the democratic transitions that Germany has undergone. Personally I hope that I can learn how to work in a fast paced environment because my internship requires me to always be ahead and make sure that students at the summer school are where they are supposed to be
