Travel day!

Our adventures today started off with a visit to the Dark Hedges, a unique spot where several Game of Thrones episodes were filmed. Walking beneath the towering trees, which arch over the main walkway, felt like stepping right into an almost sci-fi movie scene. It’s an undeniably beautiful place, even for someone who’s never watched the show. However, without that thrilling Game of Thrones story connected to it knowing iconic characters walked these very paths it wouldn’t carry the same special, almost magical feeling. It’s pretty clear that without the massive popularity of the TV series giving it that extra layer of excitement and history, the Dark Hedges likely wouldn’t be the huge tourist attraction it is today. Next on our agenda, our group made the short trip to the Giant’s Causeway, which truly had some of the most jaw-dropping views in all of Ireland. The cliffs there are immense, seemingly stretching on forever and plummeting hundreds of feet straight down into the wild Atlantic. After a quick walk through the visitor centre and gift shop, we headed down one of the main trails that leads directly to the iconic basalt columns. There were hundreds of these circular, interlocking rocks just begging to be explored. We spent an hour climbing around, possessing for some great photos, and soaking in the scenery all around us. As our time wound down, I went back into the gift shop to pick up a few souvenirs. I snagged a traditional Irish sweater, a ring with a classic Irish design, and a necklace featuring the unique symbol of the Giant’s Causeway itself, a perfect memento of such an amazing place. Following our visit to the Giant’s Causeway, our journey continued with a short trip to Derry, a city steeped in history, where we received a  fascinating tour. We explored how the city was founded and developed under the British Empire, learning about its strategic importance and growth. Our group also had the opportunity to see several sites directly linked to the Troubles which offered a powerful and somber insight into the city’s past. To cap off the day, we were treated to breathtaking scenic views of Donegal as we ascended to the top of an ancient fortress, overlooking the landscape. After visiting all these monumental locations, my main takeaway is crystal clear. It’s truly having an impactful story linked to a place that gives it its deepest meaning and resonance.
