Hi! I am Anna, a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh studying Business Analytics and Finance. I have always wanted to study abroad; that was one of the factors that drew me to Pitt when I applied to colleges. I knew that they had great global business programs, so as soon as I got the opportunity to participate, I was all in. The Global Business Institute program not only allows me to explore new areas and cultures but also allows me to participate in a global internship that aligns with my career goals and take relevant classes. As Sydney is a hub for technology and innovation, I am excited to see what I can learn from real workplace experience in an analytics role. I had never left North America before coming to Sydney, but one of the main reasons I chose here was because I wanted to expand my world thinking, especially in the workplace, and compare how different cultures approach problems, particularly across the world.

Sydney, Australia, does not disappoint (especially their coffee), there are plenty of blue beaches and local places to grab a bite to eat. However, more than that, it is a vibrant city that is a combination of lots of different cultures. A majority of the population is made up of immigrants who all bring their cultures together. I was able to experience Australia Day, which recognizes when the British landed at Sydney Harbour with fireworks and music. With their public transportation system, it is easy to get from one place to another and explore different parts of the city. The classes I am taking here are different from those I have taken at Pitt in that they all have a global focus. The program offers multiple events for us students over the semester, taking us to places such as the Opera House and the Blue Mountains, similar to events on Pitt’s campus, where we are able to spend time together outside of the classroom.
I am living in an apartment/hotel with 3 other girls, and even though we have only known each other for a week, I would consider them to be some of my closest friends. We are about a 40-minute commute from campus by either train or bus, and I have an hour commute from my internship placement. While it has been a bit different accounting for travel time to get to class, it has helped me improve my time management skills and has made me more comfortable navigating public transportation. My community has plenty of good places to eat and a grocery store only a few minutes from where I am staying. I am also able to take the bus to a beach in only 30 minutes, making it a very central area to access so many places. It is fun living with the same people in your program because you are able to commute to new places together.
So far I have already had so many learning expereiences and I am excited for what else lies ahead. I can’t wait to continue sharing what I see and what skills I develop while I am here.
