Hello! My name is Joshua Huh and I am a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh from Lower Merion, Pennsylvania. This spring break I will be studying abroad in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I am very excited to share with you about the process as we prepare for our trip, the actual work we will be doing in country, as well as the aftermath and lessons learned from this project. I believe this project will not only be a great learning experience, but also the relationship we will form with our team, our client, and the group we work with in Bolivia will all prove to be extremely valuable. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to partake in this program.
Academically, I am a sophomore in the business school, majoring in finance and minoring in economics. I originally came into school as an economics major in Dietrich, but ultimately transferred to the business school for my sophomore year. Outside of the classroom, I am involved in the Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Panther Equity (Junior Analyst-Healthcare Sector), the Club Soccer Team, and I also work at the recreation and wellness center as a member services attendant.
On a professional note, I am unsure of exactly what I wish to do in business, but I am currently exploring careers in consulting, real estate, medical sales, and wealth management.
I chose to participate in this program because I believed that this project would give me a hands on experience which would help me gain valuable knowledge about the world of consulting. I am particularly interested in the client interactions which we will have, and how we will work through the language barrier as we seek to complete our deliverables.
Personally, I chose to participate in this program because I love community service and giving back. I have a lot of experience as a volunteer, and I have actually worked with children with disabilities, and I have also done another service trip in South America. This summer, I worked as a summer camp counselor at Sunrise Day Camp, which is a nonprofit for children with cancer and other disabilities as well as their siblings. My time at Sunrise taught me a new level of patience, understanding, and the preparation needed to cater to the needs of the children we were working with. In the summer before my senior year of high school, I went on a volunteer trip to the Moca region in the Dominican Republic. Going abroad and working with nearby impoverished communities was one of the most fulfilling and fun experiences I have ever had, and I became extremely close with my team. I also have worked as a volunteer for my church doing service projects around the Philadelphia area, most notably working with Afghani refugees, helping them integrate into the Lancaster area. Lastly, I worked with a partner of the Philadelphia Union as a volunteer soccer coach in the Chester and Philadelphia area, which was the final project of my senior year.
All in all, my love of traveling, community service, and working with the youth all played a role in helping me to ultimately decide to participate in this program, and I can’t wait to see what growth and learning will arise from this opportunity.
