Partendo Presto (Leaving Soon)

My experience studying abroad in Florence has been nothing short of fantastic. I have had the incredible opportunity to really immerse myself in a culture different from mine. I never thought I would have the chance to do so this early in my life.

Traveling has become a part of me, and I was able to explore 10+ Italian cities and 8 countries during my time abroad. If I told myself that one year ago, I would not believe myself. Not even a little. I just feel so lucky to have had this once-in-a-lifetime experience that has helped to shape me. I learned so much about myself, like how I can thrive even when I am so far outside of my comfort zone. I always figure it out, and I trust myself more because of it. This is arguably the most disciplined I have ever had to be with my time management skills, and nothing can get in the way of me, Notion, and Google Calendar. Professionally, I have developed a new perspective on intercultural relations, and a deeper understanding of how to communicate effectively with different cultures. I will be sure to take that lesson to the workplace.

In terms of soft skills, I feel even more empathetic than I ever have. Stepping outside of my bubble and taking a look at the world from other people’s lenses has given me a fuller and more complete view. I also just feel more independent, reliable, and creative. I am taking everything I have learned about the world and myself with me to the next year and every year after that. From my personal life, to the classroom, and to my career. It has helped me to think bigger and take advantage of opportunities that once felt intimidating. I am more open to embracing uncertainty than ever before, which is different for me, as someone who likes to have a detailed 10-year plan. Growth most often comes from the moments you feel most challenged, and I am more motivated than ever to continue seeking out new experiences in all aspects of my life.

I could not be more grateful to have had this experience trying new things, making new friends, strengthening old friendships, and exploring Europe.

I will miss how romanticized life feels while living in the beautiful city of Firenze (Florence), and I hope to carry that same sense of whimsy back home to the US. It was wonderful to reflect through these blogs. Arrivederci Firenze! Briana Noel was here.
