Hi everyone! My name is Ellie Barnett, and I’m a Junior at the University of Pittsburgh studying Marketing and Supply Chain Management. This semester, I’m studying abroad in Florence through Pitt’s Global Business Institute. I transferred into Pitt Business my sophomore year, so still having the opportunity to study abroad during my time at Pitt has been exciting and very meaningful. On campus at Pitt, I’m involved in Delta Sigma Pi, Chi Omega, Plant Club, and I also work at the University Center for International Studies. Continuing my business coursework while living in a city as historically and culturally rich as Florence has made this experience incredibly special.
I chose the city of Florence because I was drawn to its rich history and art. Walking to class every day and passing churches and piazzas has shown me how everyday life is so closely tied to Florence’s history and past. Comparing Florence to Pittsburgh, I’ve noticed the biggest difference in the pace of everyday life. In Florence, everyone appears less rushed, and people take more time to enjoy where they are rather than constantly moving from place to place. This pace has made it easier to be present and truly take in my surroundings. Instead of learning in a traditional campus setting, many of my classes feel closely connected to the city itself. Being able to see Florence firsthand through class experiences and hands-on learning has made the coursework feel more immersive and meaningful.
I am so excited to gain a global perspective on business and better understand how culture influences the way people live, work, and communicate with one another. One of my main goals this semester is to push myself outside of my comfort zone and fully immerse myself in the local culture. Whether that’s navigating daily life using Italian, exploring new neighborhoods, or adjusting to a different routine, I want to use what I learn here to better understand the culture and everyday life in Florence.
I’m living in an apartment with other Pitt students, which has made the transition to Florence both fun and comforting. Adjusting to apartment living and city life has definitely pushed me to be more independent, and honestly, every day feels like a learning experience in its own way. I’m really grateful for the chance to study abroad in Florence, and I’m excited to keep exploring the city, learning both in and outside the classroom, and seeing where the rest of the semester takes me!
