Studying In Florence

As I near the halfway point, I can confidently say I have adjusted to my new course schedule and classes. I am not a part of an internship here, but I am taking four classes: International Finance, International Marketing, Italian, Here and Now, and Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Although only 2/4 of my classes are business-oriented, and only one is relevant to my major, I have had a great time in my classes so far. Having two non-business classes is a nice change of pace and very enjoyable. I think it is great to learn another language, not only because it is healthy for your brain, but as a way to bond deeper and understand more about a country’s culture and history. My Cross-Cultural Psychology class has also been very useful as it teaches me the different aspects of Italian and European culture and helps me be less ethnocentric. Furthermore, learning about International business has also been a great experience. Learning about how different countries’ economic environments and how multinational firms operate is a very new but informative experience.

The classes are much smaller than typical Pitt Business classes, which typically have around 30-40 people, and up to 150 for lecture classes, so it’s been nice to have a new experience in a more focused learning environment. The classes stress engagement, participation, and asking questions, which are all valuable aspects of learning. Although these are definitely relevant factors in Pitt business classes, they are more needed here to succeed in class.

All of my professors have also made for a great classroom experience, they are all residents of Florence who speak fluent English. They are great to talk to, not only about academic and professional questions, but also just about life in Florence and Italy, which I appreciate so much, as it is not easy to find locals who speak fluent English.

Overall, I have had a great time in my classes, from the Professors, the content, the learning environment, and the beautiful buildings in which my classes are held, and I am excited to keep learning!
