In many ways, being in London is very similar to the United States. There is no language barrier and there are people from all over the world here. At both Pitt and RAUL, I use public transportation to explore the city and get to my classes. However, differences in the classroom have been the most interesting to navigate.
Structurally, my grades rely more heavily on our final exams and a presentation rather than on several projects through the semester. At Richmond American University London, assignments seem more vague than at Pitt. I am used to being assigned detailed rubrics for several projects throughout the semester. However, my papers and projects have had more vague instructions at RAUL.
For example, I got to pick any make-believe project I wanted to work on a presentation and report for throughout the semester for my Project Management course. I have been designing an upgrade for a public park to have equipment accessible for children with disabilities. It has been amazing to be able to use my creativity while researching for the project. At the end of the semester, we will get to present our projects to the class. I am excited to see the different ideas and directions people have used.
At first I found this overwhelming, but I have dealt with this by reaching out to my professors often. When I have come up with paper or presentation ideas, I make sure to reach out and ask for feedback. I am forced to have more accountability over my work and make sure I get it done early so I can have the chance to chat with them. This also gives me an opportuntity to learn more about them and feel closer to the new school I am attending. I am happy to be able to take ownership of the work I am doing and learn in a new way!
I really enjoy making friends and talking to people from other countries and universities. People within London are very polite and easy to talk to. Within lectures, there is often time for small-group discussions. I have learned a lot about my peers from other universities this way. This has helped me find new places to eat around London, great parks, and the best places to go shopping! Studying abroad is amazing for stepping outside of your comfort zone to make new connections. Attached are some photos from these adventures.
