I have so many stories to share from my time abroad, but one moment stands out as especially meaningful, not because of where I was, but because of how it made me feel.
This moment took place during a trip to Madrid, Spain over spring break. My roommates and I had spent the day exploring the city and eventually found ourselves walking through Parque Infantil de la Montaña de Príncipe Pío. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the park was full of people enjoying the nice weather.
As we walked, we heard live music and stopped to listen. A singer and guitarist were performing, and as we approached, they began playing familiar songs like “All of Me” by John Legend and “Someone Like You” by Adele. A crowd started to form around them, and there was something incredibly welcoming about the atmosphere. People stood close together, recording or quietly admiring the performers.
They continued playing a variety of songs, and the energy remained calm until they started playing “Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias.
At that moment, everything changed. People began dancing, singing, and cheering, forming a large circle in the middle of the crowd. What had been a quiet audience became a full celebration! This was no longer just a performance, it had become a shared experience, full of joy and connection.
To someone unfamiliar with the song, it might have seemed like just another fun moment in the park, but to me, it meant so much more. Hearing the same Spanish music that plays in my backyard at home brought a fulfilling sense of comfort. Even thousands of miles away, I felt connected to my family and my culture. It reminded me that no matter where I go, my culture is something I will always carry with me.
There was something incredibly powerful about bonding with complete strangers over music that likely held a different meaning for each of us. Even with barriers like language or background, people still found a way to connect. Watching everyone sing and dance together, I felt completely at ease in a place that had once felt unfamiliar.
What stood out most was the joy on everyone’s faces. There were no barriers, just people enjoying the moment together.
In a world that often focuses on what divides us, that afternoon in Madrid was a quiet but powerful reminder of what brings us together. It’s hard to fully capture the weight of that experience, but I know it meant more to me than any planned excursion or landmark. It reminded me how special it feels to connect with others, and how deeply my culture shapes who I am.
