As my time in Florence comes to an end, all I can do is reflect on the amazing memories I’ve made. From the class by the Duomo, to eating pizza 5 times a week, exploring the riverbank, and weekend trips, I have had an amazing semester. I am beyond grateful to have been able to learn and grow here, and I am extremely happy with my decision to come to Florence
As a person, I was able to grow in several ways. Throughout the semester, several times I was forced outside my comfort zone, whether it be talking to locals with a language barrier or trying a new cultural experience. However, these times outside my comfort zone proved to be some of the most valuable lessons. I was able to grow my international mindset and gain a much deeper understanding of what it means to learn and respect a new culture, and how to approach this. Furthermore, I believe I grew a lot as an independent traveler. Throughout my time here, I’ve had many instances where I would be travelling alone. It was a little scary at first, and I was definitely nervous. However, I now feel like a pro at this and can confidently say my time here has helped me grow in terms of my independent abilities.
Academically, I’ve also been fortunate to have great experiences here. Over the course of the semester, I’ve taken three classes that revolve around international sectors of their respective field, as well as an Italian language course. These classes have enhanced my thinking when it comes to how we approach learning, as well as how we approach and view different cultures, and how we perceive through unconscious biases. Overall, my academic experience here has changed my perspective on learning, especially on the subject of learning about other cultures, whether it be their financial system or their family dynamics.
Over the course of my time in Florence, I have gained a few takeaways that will be with me for the rest of my life. I’ve learned what it means to truly respect and honor people’s backgrounds and traditions, and that even the smallest signs of effort can go a long way. This is not only important for me to keep as a traveller, but also as a business student, as there are business transactions that occur all over the world and with people from all types of cultures. Understanding where they come from and how to respect that goes a long way and is important for keeping healthy business relationships. Lastly, another takeaway that will stick with me is understanding the relationship between personal life and business/careers. The two are often thought of as things that should be kept completely separate. My time here has taught me that it is not this cut and dry. Of course, there is a time and a place for profesionalism and when to keep it strictly business, I believe the relationship between the two is much more complex and often they complement each other. My time here has taught me a lot about forming new relationships and how international experience can even be used as a talking point in business affairs.
Once again, Im extremley greatful for being able to go on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, and I will remember it forever.
