Wait, Have You Heard About the Heat Wave?

Let’s address the elephant in the room. This week was HOT. This might have been the first time I genuinely missed home for more than a couple of minutes because I really could have used some air conditioning this weekend. I was warned that Berlin gets hot, but I was not prepared for this heat wave. Stepping outside during the afternoon was like walking into a sauna, and the idea of riding the S-Bahn made me sweat. No matter, I did not let the high temperatures stop any of my plans, and I absolutely made the most of this week.

The start of this week we had some great weather in Berlin! I spent it visiting Pfaueninsel, which is a small island in Berlin that is home to peacocks, water buffalo, chickens, horses, and goats. I did not think that I would see water buffalo in Berlin, but I guess always expect the unexpected. The island is a nice escape from the busyness and chaos of the city. There are plenty of paths to explore, and if I had more time I would absolutely go back. Pfaueninsel is a nice reminder that there are many hidden gems in Berlin.

On Wednesday it started to get very hot out, and I was desperate for a way to cool off. I decided to explore Krumme Lanke, one of Berlin’s many lakes. The water was exactly what I needed to cool off and refresh, and it was a very peaceful and serene atmosphere. Since I went right after work there were not that many other people there which amplified the calm nature of the woods. Similar to Pfaueninsel, this experience made me appreciate how easy it is to access nature in Berlin.

My work week was cut short by some important visitors, my family! It has been fun showing them my favorite spots while also seeing new places with them. I have enjoyed getting to play tour guide and introducing them to places like Markthalle Neun, public viewings of the World Cup, and several restaurants that I have been meaning to check out. It has been special to watch my family explore a city that I have fallen in love with. I like getting to talk about what cultural differences they notice and also what they think is similar to the US. Despite the temperature we have been making the most of their trip to Berlin.

During the height of heat we spent some time in Potsdam. We definitely slowed our pace and made more stops than usual, but we still managed to see a lot of the city. It ended up being worth the sunburn in the end, Potsdam is beautiful! I am happy I shared this experience with my family because I do not think anyone will forget the time we explored Potsdam in 105 degree weather.

The second of the absolute worst of the heat we spent a Museum Island. I have been around that area many times, but I have not had the chance to explore any of the museums yet. I particularly enjoyed the Neues Museum, which is most known for the bust of the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti. All of the museums have striking architecture that is just as interesting as the artifacts on display. The Bode Museum is a gorgeous building, and I spend more time observing the walls and ceiling than the actual art.

Since I have been leading my family through Berlin, I have had the opportunity to reflect on my leadership style. Before coming to Berlin, I rarely sought out leadership positions and often preferred to be more of a follower in group projects. Since interning at HEYL I have been more eager to be a leader. Working with a team of confident women who are very capable leaders has inspired me to get outside of my comfort zone. I am witnessing first hand the positives that come from taking initiative and seeking opportunity. Watching them communicate ideas with confidence and lead effectively has been really valuable for me.

I am looking forward to the last few days of my family’s visit! I am so grateful they have taken time off work to see the city I have been living in for the past few weeks.
