Looking Back on My Time Abroad

It is hard to believe that my time abroad has already come to an end. Looking back at the goals I set for myself before arriving in Sydney, I am proud of how much I have grown both professionally and personally. This experience challenged me in ways I did not expect, introduced me to incredible people, and gave me a new perspective on working in a global environment.

One of my main goals was to strengthen my professional communication skills by working with colleagues from different backgrounds. Throughout my internship at SoCreative, I collaborated with a small, supportive team on projects ranging from researching U.S. market trends to creating onboarding materials and client presentations. Because the company was small, I had the opportunity to communicate directly with my supervisor and coworkers every day. This helped me become more confident sharing ideas, asking questions, and adapting my communication style depending on the situation, and I know these skills will benefit me in future internships and professional roles.

Another goal I set was to improve my problem-solving skills while navigating unfamiliar situations. Living and working in another country challenged me to become more independent and adaptable. Whether I was adjusting to workplace expectations, learning Australian slang, or figuring out Sydney’s public transportation system, I learned that challenges become much more manageable when I remain patient, ask questions, and stay open to learning. By the end of the program, situations that once felt intimidating had become second nature.

Building meaningful connections was another important goal, and it became one of the most rewarding parts of my experience. I formed strong relationships with my coworkers, who were incredibly welcoming and supportive throughout my internship. I also had the opportunity to attend a professional networking event where Senator Dave Sharma spoke about Australia’s economic future. Experiences like this allowed me to connect with professionals from a variety of industries while gaining insight into international business. They reinforced the importance of building genuine relationships and taking advantage of opportunities outside the classroom.

Beyond the technical experience I gained, I developed several transferable skills, including adaptability, communication, cultural awareness, teamwork, and confidence. These are skills that I know will continue to help me in my future career, regardless of the industry I pursue.

Looking back, the greatest takeaway from this experience has been my personal growth. Before arriving in Australia, I hoped to become more confident navigating unfamiliar situations, which I can now say is true. Living independently in a new country has allowed me to become more self-assured and open-minded. I will return home with valuable professional experience, lifelong friendships, and greater confidence in my ability to embrace new opportunities.
