The Silver Lining to this Journey

The Global Consulting Capstone: Projects in Marketing course with Professor Meade was one of my favorite classes that I have taken in all my years at Pitt. I have learned so many new skills and enhanced my knowledge of marketing through this class. Within these past few weeks, I have been trying to find a silver lining each week during these online class and this class with Meade had been my silver lining each time.

One of the biggest takeaways that I learned from this class was that even though the tough times, it is still possible to do anything. Due to COVID-19, the week before our study abroad was cancelled, our group was devasted to see that we were unable to travel to Germany. We were unsure how we will be able to gather more data, see our client’s culture, and ask more questions in-person with manroland Goss. However, with flexibility and through the help of the internet, we were able to finish our project. As upsetting as it was to lose an opportunity of travel during this project, our class was able to make the most out of it.

Not only have I taken away many lessons, but also have enhanced my transferrable skills. Throughout this project, I have learned to collaborate effectively with my group members. With a big project comes bigger responsibilities. Meade has helped our group become organized with our project deliverables such as assisting with a timeline in order to complete assignments by specific due dates. In doing so, our group has effectively been able to meet up with our assigned partners for our documents in order to put together our final deliverable. We were able to assign tasks that aligned with each of our group member’s strengths.

After moving online, our group had more time than ever before to group together in order to collaborate outside of class times. We were able to easily come together. This skill is easily transferrable to my future professional life because there will be times in the real world when certain group members may not be able to come in to work physically at the location and by learning how to effectively work with our group members in order to reach deadlines helped me become a better partner in group projects.

Due to the constraints we faced, this project can still be well-pitched to a potential employer in a professional interview. I gained a valuable international consulting experience from a client from Germany. My group had the opportunity to speak and work along with someone abroad and was given the opportunity to give back professional marketing advice for their given problem. Not only was this experience valuable, but also one-of-a-kind. Due to the pandemic, we were presented with a unique situation where we had to do our entire project miles away from each other. Even through this event, we were able to overcome this obstacle and come up with an amazing report for our international client.

Some advice to future students who will take this class in the future is that I hope there is no pandemic to restrict your travel plans. Although this may be difficult to avoid sometimes, this class is best when you start getting to know your group members well enough. This way, your group members and yourself can effectively work together in order to accomplish your goal within this course.

This Projects in Marketing course is a unique experience for all students. It is a consulting experience where I can put it on my resume and explain to employers that I worked as a consultant on behalf of the University of Pittsburgh. Without the help of Professor Meade, I don’t think this experience would have been as valuable as it was. Thank you for this great experience!
