Hi everyone! My name’s Lucy Wydeven and I’m a rising junior in the College of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh where I’m pursuing a Marketing major and potentially adding a Film and Media Studies minor. Outside of class I like to swim, bake, watch movies, and spend time with my friends, family and my two dogs Fergus and Flossie!
Having graduated high school in 2020, my freshman year at Pitt was far from what I had always imagined it would be. Yet, during a year plagued by online classes and harsh social restrictions, I think I made the most of it and learned a lot about myself along the way.
I came to Pitt because of all the amazing opportunities offered, so after a weird freshman year I knew I needed to find ways to feel more connected to the campus and the people around me. In the fall I decided to join Pitt’s Club Swim Team, which ended up being a great decision! Having swam competitively since I was 4 years old I was able to reconnect with the sport and meet new people, who quickly became good friends. This also led me to join the coaching staff at the Pitt Kids Swim Clinic in the spring, where I helped children aged 5-13 learn to swim. Having had a very similar job throughout high school, I was so glad to be able to coach again! It’s been such a rewarding experience to see every kid become more and more confident in their abilities in the water each week. Also in the spring, I joined Pitt’s chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity. Pushing myself to step out of my comfort zone and rush DSP has been such a valuable experience. Not only have I grown professionally and learned important skills pertaining to interviewing, resumes and networking, I’ve also gained some lifelong friendships! Another organization I’m apart of at Pitt is the Lambda Sigma Honor Society, where I served as the Charity Ball Chair this past year. My responsibilities included organizing the honor society’s annual Charity Ball, leading a committee of my peers, and working with school and charity officials to ensure the success of the event. I’m happy to say the event was indeed a success and we were able to donate the proceeds to The Homeless Children’s Education Fund, a local Pittsburgh charity aimed at advancing the education of youth experiencing homelessness in our community.
Another thing that drew me to Pitt was their extensive study abroad options. After talking with my family and academic advisor (and having already lost a “normal” year at Pitt) I decided a summer program would work best for me. Fortunately, one of the summer programs offered is the International Internship in Dublin! Growing up with red hair and freckles in an Irish-Catholic family, I always wanted to explore where my family is originally from. While abroad, I hope to become a more informed citizen of the world by gaining a deeper knowledge and appreciation of cultures other than those I was raised in. Through exposure to the unique traditions and lifestyles in Ireland and potentially those of other countries I might be able to travel to, I hope to learn more about myself and what I want out of my life and career. Along with experiencing the Irish culture first-hand, I really want to gain a better understanding of business abroad. On that note, I’m so excited to have been placed in a marketing internship with the Restaurants Association of Ireland! The Restaurants Association of Ireland is the representative group for the Irish Restaurant Industry and provides a wealth of benefits and services to restaurant owners. This internship will allow me the opportunity to utilize the knowledge I’ve gained through my marketing and business core classes at Pitt and experience Irish work life. I hope this internship will guide me on my career path and help me better understand what I want my future to look like. During this program I will challenge myself to further develop my intrapersonal skills of resiliency, independence and problem solving. Professionally, I hope to grow by understanding Irish and European work practices and marketing strategies while building a global network. I’ve always dreamt of living and building a career abroad, so this internship will be the perfect opportunity to get a glimpse of what this dream would look like in reality.
I can’t wait to arrive in Dublin soon and have an amazing summer learning and exploring!
