Dublin Here I Come!

Dublin Here I Come!

Hello!

My name is Holly Garrett and I am entering my senior year at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. I am a double major in Information Systems concentrating in business and marketing! My undergraduate education has been quite a wild experience thus far. I started my college career at Florida Southern College. I was excited to learn and hopefully start my own business upon graduation. I am very creative and have a deep passion for learning. After my first semester and a half, COVID-19 hit and I transferred to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown to be a little bit closer to family. I have since changed my degree and outlook on a future career. Transferring to a new school during a pandemic, while working completely remotely and not knowing anyone, was one of the most difficult tasks I have faced so far.  I met my peers for the first time this past fall as a junior. Arriving on campus and finally being in person was definitely worth the wait. I love the small class setting, and making personal connections with all of my professors which leads to internships, research paper opportunities, and advice about future higher education. On the other hand, I love how even though the University of Pittsburgh – Johnstown is a branch campus, it is still connected to PITT so I have all of the extracurriculars and abroad connections associated with a large university! Heading into my college education, even at my old university, I did not know exactly what I wanted to do. I have a passion for many things in life and found it hard to narrow to a single major or future career for years. One of the great aspects of PITT is they have a career assessment examination that analyzes several aspects of your life and passions to recommend the best option for your future. I love marketing and information systems, and learning how businesses market their products in different ways per product is fascinating to me. I love information systems because of the constantly changing technology. My future dream job is to become a business analyst and track trends across companies marketing strategies and sales to interpret and advise the companies on how to move forward.

I am participating in the international internship Dublin program. I chose this program for several reasons. I am interested in international marketing, which has not been a large part of my education so far. I’m hoping to gain invaluable resources and knowledge through my internship. I am also 75% Irish! I grew up Irish dancing since second grade and I have a deep passion to learn more about my own culture. I love to travel and push myself to gain new limits. It is one of the core reasons I attended a school in Florida because I wanted to branch out with new opportunities. My family has encouraged me for years to go abroad, and it is always been something I wanted to do myself but did not have the chance to do so before now. My brother and both parents have been abroad and their experiences made them realize how much larger our world is. It is so easy to become focused on our own routine and life and miss the bigger picture of how all cultures are connected just by being humans. COVID-19 may have delayed this experience for me, but it sure didn’t stop it from happening before graduation! It will be exciting to make connections with other students and professional contacts that I hope to maintain for years to come. I look forward to bringing my Pittsburgh-can-do attitude, and being the best representative of Pitt that I can be.

Upon cruising the Pitt abroad website, I found this unique internship experience. I have never heard of anything like this before and I am so thrilled that I was not only accepted but able to make such a journey! I will be working for a company, patientMpower, which is a medical technology company in the heart of Dublin. They focus on bringing care to people with kidney and lung diseases. I will be assisting their marketing and sales team for the duration of my trip. I look forward to bringing my education to life with a hands-on internship experience. The company was founded in 2015 and is continuously growing. The company that organizes the internships, Eusa, did an incredible job. I was particularly looking for a marketing position and a technical company so I could see the insides of both the technical aspect and learn about coding but also integrate my marketing knowledge with first-hand experience! I’m excited to see hopefully take this technology to a new level!
